Brazilian diplomat and abolitionist. Born in Recife in the northeast of the country, he studied law in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Recife. He became a diplomat in 1876 and served in Washington and London before returning to Brazil in 1878 and being elected to the House of Representatives representing the state of Pernambuco. He was an eloquent speaker in Congress, and advocated unconditional abolition of slavery, the election of non-Catholics to the National Assembly, and direct suffrage. He lost the next election, traveled to London, joined the Abolitionist Society, and wrote and published "Emancipation of Slaves." He returned to Brazil in 1884 and was again elected to the House of Representatives, where he worked hard to abolish slavery. After slavery was abolished by the Golden Decree in 1888 and the empire he supported collapsed in the Republican Revolution the following year, he retired from politics and devoted himself to writing. In his later years, he contributed to the resolution of border disputes as a diplomat. [Muneo Yamada] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
