A novel by the 3rd century Greek author Heliodorus. Its official title is "The Ethiopian Tale of Theagenes and Charicleia" (Ta peri Theagenēn kai Charikleian Aithiopika). It is the best of the romantic adventure stories that were popular at the time. Theagenes falls in love with Charicleia, a Delphic priestess, and elopes to Egypt, but he is captured by pirates, they are separated, and after many adventures he is captured by the Ethiopian army and is about to be sacrificed when he discovers that Charicleia is the daughter of the Ethiopian king, and the two are happily married.
