Daisuke Ise - Taifu of Ise

Japanese:
Daisuke Ise - Taifu of Ise

Dates of birth and death unknown. A female poet of the mid-Heian period, and one of the Thirty-six Immortal Poets of the Middle Ages. Daughter of Sukechika, granddaughter of Onakatomi Yoshinobu. Around 1008 (Kanko 5), she began serving the Empress Shoshi, and at this time, a monk from Nara presented her with a double-flowered cherry tree, which Murasaki Shikibu said, "This year's harvester is now coming to visit," she composed a poem entitled "The double-flowered cherry tree of the ancient capital of Nara, today its nine layers of fragrance," which instantly earned her recognition as a poet. After that, as a close aide to Jotomon-in Shoshi, she was active in public and private poetry contests from Jotomon-in Kikuawase in 1032 (Chogen 5) to 1056 (Tenki 4), and left behind many congratulatory poems and folding screen poems. Her style of poetry is characterized by the use of related words and hanging words. She gave birth to many excellent poets, including Princess Yasusuke, with her husband Takashina Nariyoshi, and was once appointed as the tutor of Prince Sadahito (Emperor Shirakawa) due to his gentle personality. In 1060 (Kohei 3), she wrote a congratulatory poem for Shiga Sojo on his 90th birthday, and died shortly thereafter at a fairly advanced age. Her family anthologies include the "Ise Daifushu," a miscellaneous collection, and two separate collections of Ruisan poetry, the "Ise Daifushu."
