A general term for the Semitic languages spoken in Ethiopia. Along with South Arabian, it is one of the Southeastern Semitic languages. It is heavily influenced by the base language Cushitic. It is divided into Northern Ethiopian, consisting of Ge'ez, Tigrigna, and Tigre, and Southern Ethiopian, consisting of Amharic, Hararic, Gurage, and Gafat. The oldest document is a Ge'ez inscription from the 3rd to 4th century.

エチオピアに行われてきた，セム語族に属する言語の総称。南アラビア語とともに南東セム語をなす。基層言語であるクシ語の影響が強い。ゲエズ語，ティグリニャ語，ティグレ語から成る北エチオピア語と，アムハラ語，ハラル語，グラゲ語，ガファト語などから成る南エチオピア語とに分けられる。最古の資料は3～4世紀のゲエズ語の碑文。
