mémoires (English spelling)

...The former is an account of the author's own experiences of participating in the battle for the throne of Persia's prince Cyrus together with Greek mercenaries, and of his difficult journey back home after Cyrus' death in battle, and the latter, as the title suggests, is a memoir-style biography of Socrates. In modern times, excellent memoirs have been particularly prominent in France, and it is no wonder that the French word mémoires has become a common name in all countries. For example, there are memoirs by such men as Commines, who served Louis XI and Charles VIII, Jean-François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz (1613-79), who played an active role in the Fronde rebellion of the 17th century, and the Duke of Saint-Simon, who vividly portrayed in harsh writing the inner workings of court politics during the reign of Louis XIV. There are also memoirs by Napoleon in his later years, written down and edited by Las Cases, such as the Records of St. Helena.
