Also known as the Tsushima Incident. This incident occurred in February 1861 when the Russian warship Posadnik was stationed in Tsushima, plotting to occupy the island. In order to check Britain's ambitions of occupying Tsushima, the Posadnik anchored in Aso Bay on the pretext of repairing the hull. In March, the Posadnik built barracks in Imozaki and demanded a permanent lease on the surrounding area. The Tsushima Domain and islanders resisted fiercely, and the shogunate sent Foreign Magistrate Oguri Tadanori to demand that the Russian ship withdraw, but it did not move. British envoy to the USSR Alcock offered to cooperate, and two British ships were dispatched to intimidate the Russians, who finally left in August.
