Yamato Honzo

A herbal medicine book from the Edo period written by Kaibara Ekiken in 1708 (5th year of the Hoei era). Most of Ekiken's works were written after the age of 50, with Yamato Honzo being completed when he was 79 and published the following year. From the list of drugs in Honzo Komoku, 772 types were selected, excluding those not found in Japan and those with questionable medicinal properties, and further including quotations from other books, Japanese specialty drugs, and drugs imported from the West, for a total of 1,362 types of medicines. While the book has a natural history orientation overall, it also often touches on medicinal properties. Along with Yojokun, it is one of Ekiken's masterpieces.

江戸時代の本草書。1708年（宝永5）に貝原益軒が著した。益軒の著作の大半は50歳以降の作で、『大和本草』も79歳のときに完成、翌年に刊行されている。『本草綱目』収載品のなかから、日本に産しないものおよび薬効的に疑わしいものを除き、772種をとり、さらに他書からの引用、日本特産品および西洋からの渡来品などを加え、1362種の薬物を収載した。全体としては博物学的な傾向にあるが、しばしば薬効にも触れている。『養生訓』とともに益軒の代表作である。
