It is thought to be a hybrid between the Taiwanese honeysuckle A. chinensis R.Br., which has many small flowers, and the Chinese A. uniflora R.Br., which has large flowers, and has intermediate characteristics between the two species, such as the calyx lobes being divided into 2 to 5 on the same plant.
