Zenjoji Temple
This temple is of the Soto sect of Buddhism, Daijoji school, located in Ujitawara-cho, Kyoto Prefecture. It was founded in 991 by Taira Heisu of Todai-ji Temple with the support of the Sekkan family, and later received 1,000 chobu of land from Somayama, and operated with an eleven-headed Kannon statue as its principal image. It went into decline after the Muromachi period, and in 1680 Gesshu Soko entered the temple and converted it to the current sect. Its ancient documents (12 volumes, 4 books) from the time of its founding, including historical materials on the border dispute between Somayama and the neighboring Sotsuka Manor, and nine Buddhist statues including the principal image, are designated Important Cultural Properties.
