...The population in the Middle Ages is thought to have been over 20,000, judging from the great fire of 1501 (Bunki 1) in which several thousand houses were burned down. The Middle Ages in Sakamoto came to an end with the burning of Mount Hiei by Oda Nobunaga in September 1571. The Nippon Jesuit Society Annual Report reports the situation at that time as follows: "The townspeople of Sakamoto also climbed the mountain with their wives and children, following the advice of the priests...Approximately 1,500 priests died, and the number of lay people, including men, women and children, was the same." ...
