It is a perennial plant of the Crassulaceae family with sawtoothed leaves and yellow flowers that bloom from May to July in large numbers in cymes (illustration). It is thought that the name Korinsou comes from this appearance, but there is also a theory that it is Kirinso. In Japan, it is distributed from Kyushu to Hokkaido, and there are many variations. It has been cultivated since the Edo period. Those from Hokkaido are called Ezokirinsou, and the stems branch out well and become woody at the bottom. Overwintering buds form above ground and send out stolon underground. Kirinso on the coast of Honshu grows upright and grows to about 30cm in height.
