A unitary authority (council area) in the east of Scotland. Its administrative seat is Glenrothes. It became a unitary authority in 1996 after the reorganization of local governments. The entire area overlaps with the former county of Fife. It faces the North Sea to the east, and is bounded to the north by the Firth of Tay, an inlet of the North Sea, and to the south by the Firth of Forth. The area is made up of gently rolling lowlands, with occasional hills. The fertile Fife Valley stretches to the north, through which the River Eden flows northeast and empties into the North Sea near St. Andrews. Coal mining areas, which form part of the Scottish Central Coalfield, stretch from the west to the south. Agriculture is thriving in the northeast, centered on the Fife Valley, where grains, potatoes, sugar beets, dairy cattle, and sheep are cultivated. In the southwest, industry is the main industry, and in Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline there are paper products, whiskey, electronic equipment, metal products, food processing, chemicals, and other industries. Glenrothes, one of the largest new towns in the UK, is home to various light industries. In the past, transportation was extremely poor, but a railway bridge was built across the Firth of Tay and the Firth of Forth in the 1870s to 1890s, and a road bridge was built in the 1960s, providing direct access to both Dundee in the north and Edinburgh in the south. Area: 1,325 km2 . Population: 358,930 (2006 estimate). Fife |
