Mafeking - Mafeking (English spelling)

Mafeking - Mafeking (English spelling)

A town located in the north-central part of South Africa, at the northern tip of Cape Province. Population 6,775 (1980). It is the center of the Balarong people, and the town's name means "place of many stones". In 1884, it was occupied by British troops under the command of C. Warren, and an administrative office was established to govern the neighboring British Protectorate of Bechuanaland (now Botswana). The town became world famous because it was the place where British General Baden-Powell held out a long period of time against a siege by the Boer army during the Second Boer War. In 1980, it was handed over to the black autonomous region of Bophuthatswana, and remained part of the autonomous region until 1994. After the abolition of apartheid, it became part of Northwest Province. Due to its high altitude, it is not suitable for agricultural production, so livestock farming and dairy farming are thriving.
