Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander in the early Kamakura period. His biological father was Sato Nakakiyo, a chamberlain and descendant of Fujiwara no Hidesato, and his foster father was Goto Sanemoto, a member of the same clan. He rose to the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Kebiishi, and Saemon Junior Lieutenant. During the Genpei War, he sided with the Minamoto clan, and in the Battle of Yashima (1185) he and his foster father burned down the Yashima Imperial Palace, leading to his appointment as Shugo of Sanuki Province. He was appointed Shugo without the permission of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and was temporarily suspended from serving in Kamakura. He was later pardoned, and was active mainly in Kyoto, aiding Ichijo Yoshiyasu, the Shugo of Kyoto. In 1199, he plotted an attack on Minamoto no Michichika with Nakahara Masamichi and Ono Yoshinari, and was exiled. After Michichika's death, he was pardoned and returned to Kyoto, where he became a close attendant to the retired Emperor Gotoba. During the Jōkyū War (1221), he sided with Kyoto and was beheaded by his son, Mototsuna, who sided with Kamakura.

鎌倉前期の武将。実父は藤原秀郷の子孫の内舎人佐藤仲清,養父は同族の兵衛尉後藤実基。官位は従五位上,検非違使・左衛門少尉に昇った。源平の争乱では源氏方に参じ,屋島の戦(1185)では養父と共に屋島内裏を焼く戦功を挙げ,讃岐国の守護に任じられる。源頼朝の許しを得ずに兵衛尉に任官し,一時鎌倉への出仕を停止される。その後許され,おもに京にあって京都守護一条能保を助けて活躍。正治1(1199)年,中原政経,小野義成と源通親襲撃を企て流罪。通親死後に許され再び京にあり,後鳥羽上皇に近侍するようになる。承久の乱(1221)に際しては京方につき,鎌倉方の子息基綱によって斬首された。
