A business that diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and replaces parts for automobiles. Since poor or good automobile maintenance is directly linked to accidents, pollution, and fuel waste, each maintenance shop is required to have mechanics with certain national qualifications and diagnostic and work equipment, and certification based on the Road Transport Vehicle Act is required, and will be revoked if there is any fraud. Maintenance work includes preventive maintenance that is performed periodically and emergency maintenance when a problem occurs, but within preventive maintenance, maintenance performed just before a vehicle inspection accounts for just under half of sales, while emergency maintenance accounts for around 40%.

自動車の診断，調整，修理，部品交換を行う事業。自動車整備の良･不良は事故，公害，燃料の浪費に直結するため，各整備工場に国家検定による一定資格の整備士と診断および作業用機器の保有が義務付けられ，道路運送車両法に基づく認証が必要であり，不正があれば取り消される。整備作業には，定期的に行う予防整備と不具合が発生したときの臨時整備とがあるが，予防整備のうち車検直前の車検整備が売上げの半分弱を占め，臨時整備は4割程度である。
