Middle and lower-ranking officials in Kyoto. The family originated when Isoshiomi was given the title of Shigano no Sukune and then Shigano Ason, and his sons included Shigano Sadatsugu and Sadao. His descendants played important roles in the Gaki (Japanese military commander) position, one of the important posts under the Ritsuryo system. The Shigano clan is also written as Shigeno, and although various genealogies say that they are descendants of Emperor Seiwa, they are thought to have originated when the family of Shigano Sadatsugu settled in Chiisagata County, Shinano. They later split into various families, including the Uno clan, Nezu clan, and Mochizuki clan (the three branches of the Shigano clan), and spread to various provinces and prospered. There are many others who claim to be Shigano in various provinces, such as the Shigano clan, which became middle and lower-ranking aristocrats from the Mitsutaka Genji clan, and the first branch of Shigano Kiyohiko, a samurai of the Choshu domain who became a baron during the Meiji Restoration, but many of their genealogies are unknown.
