Wangara people - Wangara tribe (English spelling)

Japanese: ワンガラ族 - ワンガラぞく（英語表記）Wangara

An Islamized merchant group that is believed to have been in charge of the gold trade in the interior of West Africa. It is also known by names such as Wangara, Wangarawa, and Ungaros. A 12th-century Arabic Sicilian geography book mentions the existence of a "country of Wangara" south of the ancient kingdom of Ghana, which had flourished through gold trade until the 11th century. After the decline of ancient Ghana, the Mali Empire, which flourished to the east in the Great Bend of the Niger River, also relied on trade between rock salt transported from the Sahara Desert and gold brought from the country of Wangara as an important economic foundation.
