The capital of Junin Department in central Peru. It is located about 200km east of the capital Lima, in the Andes Mountains, in the fertile valley of the Mantaro River, a watershed of the Amazon River, at an altitude of about 3,260m. Founded by the Spaniards in 1538 along an Inca route, it developed as a mining and agricultural center during the colonial period. It is currently a major commercial center in the central Andes, distributing agricultural products such as wheat, barley, corn, and potatoes, as well as mineral products such as copper, silver, and coal, and also producing woolen textiles from sheep and alpacas. A large market is held every Sunday, where Indians living in the surrounding area gather with a wide variety of goods, including rugs, blankets, and pottery made from llama and alpaca wool, as well as agricultural products. It is the location of the National Centro del Peru University (1962). It is connected to Lima by a main road and a railway. Population: 207,600 (estimated 1990).
