...In ancient Thailand, there was a custom of sprinkling lime on betel nuts, wrapping them in betel leaves, and chewing them together. These ingredients were placed in locally produced lacquerware to entertain guests. In Thailand, it is called Kinmark, and in Thai, kin means to chew and mark means betel, and it is said that this was corrupted to Kinma and came to refer to Thai lacquerware. It was brought to Japan by the Yawata-sen and Shuin-sen ships, and was highly valued by tea masters in the Edo period, and tea boxes said to have been owned by Rikyu have been handed down. ...
