Adaptation rights

Japanese: 改作権 - かいさくけん
Adaptation rights

...Therefore, when a theatrical work is performed, a performance fee (script fee) must be paid to the copyright holder (usually the scriptwriter). Since copyright includes the right to adapt a work, such as dramatizing, adapting, filming, broadcasting, and translating, it is not permitted to adapt and perform a work without the consent of the author (copyright holder). In the past, both in Japan and abroad, resident playwrights provided works to troupes, so performance rights and fees were not an issue.
