...refers to the presence of both male and female elements in the genitals of the same person. The Western term originates from Hermaphroditus in Greek mythology. It is commonly called "futanari" and is also found in higher animals, mainly mammals. Gender is usually determined by the combination of sex chromosomes that occurs at the time of conception. Men have an XY sex chromosome composition, while women have an XX sex chromosome composition. In a normal fetus, the gonadal differentiation occurs, that is, the testes develop in boys and the ovaries develop in girls. The testes secrete male hormones that promote the development of the Wolffian ducts, which are the basis of the male genitalia, and inhibit the development of the Müllerian ducts, which are the basis of the female genitalia.
