Donburi - Rice bowl
〘Noun〙① A thick, deep ceramic bowl for serving food. Donburi bachi. ※Essays, Mimibukuro (1784-1814), 6: "Tofu was boiled hot and put into the donburi bowl."② A large bag that can be carried in the bosom to hold money, tissues, and other things. Made from chintz or donsu , it was popular among young playboys in the Edo period. ※Kibyoushi, Etsuhiki Ezo Osoryo (1788), "I'll make a big bowl out of Ezo Nishiki."③ A large storage container made of the same fabric that is attached to the front of a belly wrap by a craftsman. ※Rakugo, Iso no Shiranami (1890), <Dobashitei Ryuuma VII> "Money is rumbling inside the hidden bag in the belly wrap. "④ An abbreviation of "donburimono (bowl of rice)." ※Haiku poem, Futaba no Matsu (1690), "A bowl of rice that wakes the sleep of the evening"⑤ A small cargo ship engaged in buying and storing cargo mainly in the Seto Inland Sea during the Edo period. A small cargo ship of the Benzai-zukuri lineage, many of which had a capacity of about 100 to 150 koku. Isaba. ※Wakan Senyoshu (1766), vol. 4, "Tonfuri. Voiced consonant, unreadable. A small boat, a boat with a capacity of 130 koku, or 140 to 150 koku." [Additional note] "Donburi" has the meaning of the sound of throwing something into a well, as in "Shuin," " A sound of throwing two things into a well." The reason "donburi" was used for the noun donburi may be because "donburi" was the Chinese word that corresponds to the adverb donburi, which refers to the sound of throwing something into a well.

どん【丼】

〘語素〙 (「どんぶり(丼)」の変化したもの) 多く食品名の下の方を省略した形に付いて、それを材料としたどんぶり飯をいう。「うなどん」「天どん」「かつどん」「玉どん」など。※現代新語辞典(1919)「…どん どんぶりの略。例へば天ぷらの丼飯(どんぶりめし)を天どんといひ。鰻の丼飯をうなどんといふが如きである」
