Art dealers continued to play a major role in the art movements of the first half of the 20th century, including Kahnweiler, who dealt with Picasso and Cubist artists; H. Walden, who founded the gallery and publishing company Sturm in Berlin as a base for Expressionism and published a magazine of the same name; photographer Stieglitz's 291 Gallery (New York), which was the starting point of contemporary American art; Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979), who established the Gallery of the Century in New York during World War II and paved the way for postwar Abstract Expressionism; and René Drouin (1905-), who held solo exhibitions of works by Bols, Fautrier, and Dubuffet in Paris before and after the Liberation.
