Flushing is a port city in the southwestern part of the Netherlands, in the province of Zeeland. Its English name is Flushing. It has a population of 44,776 (2001). It is located at the southern end of Walcheren Island in the delta at the mouth of the Schelde River. Facing the Wester Schelde River, the city has developed into a port for oil refining, chemicals, steel, and other industries. The first nuclear power plant in the Netherlands is located in the east. Flushing has long been a herring fishing port and a gateway to Antwerp on the upper reaches of the Schelde River. It obtained city rights in 1247, and in 1572 it rebelled against Spain, paving the way for Dutch independence. Since the construction of a shipyard in 1875, it has been an industrial and commercial port, as well as a port connecting to the UK. In 1944, during World War II, the Allied forces landed and recaptured the town from the Germans. The city has the St. James Church, built in 1308, the city hall built in 1733, and the city museum has many collections related to Admiral de Ruyter, who was born in the city. It is also known as a Dutch naval base and a swimming beach. [Takaharu Hasegawa] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
