King of the ancient Assyrian Empire at its height. Reigned 680-669 BC. His correct name was Aššur-aḫu-iddin (meaning "Assur has given me an elder brother"). He was a member of the Sargonid dynasty. He became the crown prince over his elder brothers and was appointed governor of Babylon by his father, Sennaherib. After his father was assassinated in a conspiracy by his brothers (681 BC), he defeated the rebels at Hanigalbat, entered the capital, Nineveh, and ascended to the throne. He devoted almost his entire reign to restoring the city of Babylon and northern Babylonia, which his father had destroyed, and stabilized the people's hearts. He also conquered the southernmost "Sea Country" and consolidated the south and east by making a peace treaty with Elam. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
正しくはアッシュール・アフ・イッディンAššur‐aḫu‐iddin(〈アッシュール神,われに兄を与え給えり〉の意味)。
