French poet, writer, and critic. He initially aspired to be a painter, but was influenced by his classmate Nerval and became interested in the Romantic movement's standard-bearer Hugo, and joined the literary movement. After his collection of poems, Albertus, he advocated artistic supremacy in his novel Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835), and further pursued this in his collection of poems, Cloisonné and Raden, becoming a pioneer of the highbrow movement. His works include the novel Capitaine Fracas (1863), which depicts the reign of Louis XIII, and his memoirs, The History of Romanticism (1872).

フランスの詩人，作家，批評家。初め画家を志したが，同級生ネルバルの影響でロマン主義の旗手ユゴーに傾倒し文学運動に加わる。詩集《アルベルチュス》のあと，小説《モーパン嬢》（1835年）で芸術至上主義を提唱し，詩集《七宝と螺鈿(らでん)》でこれを追究，高踏派の先駆となる。ルイ13世時代を描いた小説《カピテーヌ・フラカス》（1863年），回想録《ロマン主義の歴史》（1872年）などがある。
