…Faced with the issue of how to overcome decadence in Europe, especially in France, while Aragon and others found a way out in Communism, Deru aspired to the path of Fascism. His ideological turmoil during this time is evident in his novel The Dreaming Bourgeoisie (1937) and, more directly, in his autobiographical novel Gilles (1939). During World War II, he cooperated with Germany, taking on the role of editor of the wartime magazine NRF, but in 1945, an arrest warrant was issued for him on charges of collaboration with Germany, leading to his suicide. …
