A village in Shimokita District, northern Aomori Prefecture. Population 3,019 (1995). Located at the southwestern tip of the Shimokita Peninsula, facing the Hiradate Strait to the west and Mutsu Bay to the south. More than 80% of the village area is mountainous, most of which is national forest. Wakinosawa, the center of the village, flourished as a shipping port for hiba lumber in the early modern period, and trade with the Hokuriku region was active. The village also had the largest cod catch in Mutsu Bay, and the cod was mainly transported to the Edo area. The west coast is a magnificent sea cliff that continues from Hotokegaura in the north, and is designated as Shimokita Peninsula Quasi-National Park. On Taijima, 400m off the coast of Ushinokubi Cape at the southern tip, there is a statue of Benten, who tells the legend of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, and the surrounding area is an underwater park. 青森県北部,下北郡の村。人口3019(1995)。下北半島の南西端に位置し,西は平舘海峡,南は陸奥湾に面する。村域の8割以上が山村で,そのほとんどが国有林である。中心の脇野沢は近世,ヒバ材の積出港として栄え,北陸方面との交易が盛んであった。またタラは陸奥湾随一の水揚げがあり,おもに江戸方面へ運ばれた。西海岸は北の仏ヶ浦から続く豪壮な海食崖で,下北半島国定公園に指定されている。南端の牛ノ首岬の沖400mにある鯛島には坂上田村麻呂にまつわる伝説を伝える弁才天がまつられ,周囲は海中公園となっている。
