Coccolithophorida

...The name was given by TH Huxley (1858) to the disk- or oval-shaped calcite found in deep-sea sediments in the North Atlantic. It was later discovered to be a part of the group known collectively as calcareous nannoplankton, secreted by a single-celled, planktonic algae belonging to the haptophyte class called Coccolithophorida. There are more than 150 species of extant Coccolithophorida, including Coccolithus pelagicus , and with the exception of a few species, they photosynthesize and reproduce in the photic zone, which occupies the surface layer of the ocean waters of the oceans other than the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, about 150 meters deep. ...
