Miyamajishi

Japanese: 御山獅子 - みやまじし
Miyamajishi
Title of a Jiuta/Koto piece. Kyoto-style Tegotomono. Composed by Kikuoka Kengyo. The koto was performed by Yaezaki Kengyo. The lyrics were written by Takenaka Sumiko of the Ise Matsusaka Mitsui family. The title "Miyama" refers to Mount Shinro, located south of the Inner Shrine of Ise Jingu. The lyrics are a compilation of the scenery around the shrine in the four seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter, and also incorporate the lion dance of Ise Kagura. The composition is a maeutai (first song), tegoto (second song), naka chirashi (first chirashi), and atouta (second song). The sangen (three-stringed instrument) is played in hon-choshi (first chord), ni-agari (second chord), and taka-san-dari (third chord). The koto (three-stringed instrument) changes from han-kumoi-choshi (first chord), to hi-choshi (first chord), and chu-kuro-choshi (third chord). The splendor of the technique, such as the ingenious kakeai (advancement), the frequent use of hajiki (first and second chords) on the sangen (first and second strings), and the use of kandokoro (lower chords), is popular, and the piece is also performed as a celebratory piece.
