Born in the first year of the Gen'ei era. Son of Fujiwara Tadamichi. Tendai sect. Studied under Masuchi at Onjo-ji Temple in Omi (Shiga Prefecture). Served as the precept master when Emperor Goshirakawa became a monk. In the second year of the Oho era, he became the head priest of Tendai, and later the abbot of Onjo-ji Temple. During this time, he was appointed Daisozu in the second year of the Chokan era (1164). He was also known as a poet, and 12 of his poems were included in imperial anthologies such as the "Senzai Wakashu." He died on October 16, the first year of the Jisho era. He was 60 years old.
