Kakuchu

Japanese: 覚忠 - かくちゅう

1118－1177 A monk from the late Heian period.
Born in the first year of the Gen'ei era. Son of Fujiwara Tadamichi. Tendai sect. Studied under Masuchi at Onjo-ji Temple in Omi (Shiga Prefecture). Served as the precept master when Emperor Goshirakawa became a monk. In the second year of the Oho era, he became the head priest of Tendai, and later the abbot of Onjo-ji Temple. During this time, he was appointed Daisozu in the second year of the Chokan era (1164). He was also known as a poet, and 12 of his poems were included in imperial anthologies such as the "Senzai Wakashu." He died on October 16, the first year of the Jisho era. He was 60 years old. 元永元年生まれ。藤原忠通の子。天台宗。近江(おうみ)(滋賀県)園城(おんじょう)寺の増智に師事。後白河上皇の出家に際して戒師をつとめた。応保2年天台座主(ざす),のち園城寺長吏。その間の長寛2年(1164)大僧正に任じられた。歌人としても知られ,「千載和歌集」などの勅撰集に12首はいっている。治承(じしょう)元年10月16日死去。60歳。京都出身。
