Abe Eishiro

Abe Eishiro
1902-1984 A washi paper maker from the Showa period.
Born on January 14, 1902. Trained at the Izumo Papermaking Training School and devoted himself to the family business of making washi paper. In 1931, he met Muneyoshi Yanagi and participated in the folk art movement, creating Izumo folk art paper that made use of the characteristics of ganpishi paper. In 1948, he was made a Living National Treasure. He passed away on December 18, 1984, at the age of 82. He was from Shimane Prefecture. His works include "Izumo Folk Art Paper Collection" and "Washi Zanmai".

明治35年1月14日生まれ。出雲国(いずものくに)製紙伝習所で修業し,家業の和紙づくりにはげむ。昭和6年柳宗悦(むねよし)と出あい民芸運動に参加,雁皮紙(がんぴし)の特色をいかした出雲民芸紙を創作。43年人間国宝。昭和59年12月18日死去。82歳。島根県出身。著作に「出雲民芸紙譜」「和紙三昧(ざんまい)」など。
