Three-topic story

Japanese: 三題噺 - さんだいばなし

A form of rakugo. A rakugo performer receives three topics from the audience - a person, an item, and a place - and then extemporarily puts together a story. It is said to have started in Bunka 1 (1804) when Sanshotei Karaku I put together the three topics "Benkei, Tsuji-kun, and the Fox" at the Kujaku teahouse in Shitaya, Edo. Although it is rarely attempted today, there are many that remain as repertoires, such as "Kajikazawa," "Daibutsu-mochi," and "Shibahama," which were once composed as three-topic stories.

落語の一形式。落語家が客席から「人物」「品物」「場所」と3つの題をもらって，即席で一席の噺にまとめるもの。文化1 (1804) 年，江戸下谷の孔雀茶屋で1世三笑亭可楽が「弁慶・辻君・狐」の3題をまとめたのが始りとされている。現在ではほとんど試みられないが，かつて三題噺としてつくられた『鰍沢 (かじかざわ) 』『大仏餅』『芝浜』など，演目として残っているものも少くない。
