Huarás. The capital of Ancash Province in central Peru. It is located about 300km north of the capital Lima, overlooking the Santa River, which flows north-northwest through the Andes, and is about 3,050m above sea level. It was built by the Spaniards on the remains of a settlement in the area where Indian culture flourished since ancient times. Even today, most of the residents are Indians. It is the center of the upper reaches of the Santa River, known as the Huaylas Valley, and distributes barley, corn, potatoes, etc. that grow in the valley. Industries such as textiles and beer are also located in the city. Silver, cinnabar, and coal are mined nearby. There are many high peaks covered with perpetual snow and glaciers in the surrounding area, including Mount Huascarán (6,768m), the highest peak in the country, which stands about 30km north. The pleasant climate and beautiful scenery make it a popular tourist destination. It is often damaged by avalanches when snow melts and landslides caused by earthquakes, and the damage in 1941 and 1970 was particularly devastating. The city is connected to the Pan-American Highway along the Pacific coast by a road that runs west from the city and crosses the Sierra Negra mountain range. Population: 65,600 (1990 estimate).
