A small terrestrial crustacean of the Isopoda family, Balaminidae (illustration). Widely distributed throughout the world, it is commonly found in damp, dark places such as straw, dead leaves, and garbage, and under stones and wood. It grows to about 11 mm in body length. Its body is dorsoventrally flattened, oblong, and about half its length in width. It is dark brown or gray-brown, and has horizontal rows of coarse granules on its surface. It does not roll its body into a sphere like its fellow pill bug, the pillbug. The suborder Balaminidae includes the Ligididae, which does not have a trachea as an abdominal limb, and the families Balaminidae, Balaminidae, Armadillididae, and Balaminidae, which have a trachea as an abdominal limb. 等脚目ワラジムシ科の小型の純陸生甲殻類(イラスト)。世界中に広く分布しており,わら,枯葉や塵芥の間,石や木材の下など,湿気を含む暗所にきわめてふつうに見られる。体長11mmくらいになる。体は背腹に扁平,長楕円形,幅は体長の約半分くらい。暗褐色または灰褐色をしており,体表に粗い顆粒の横列がある。同科のダンゴムシのようには体を球形に丸めない。ワラジムシ亜目には,気管を腹肢にもたないフナムシ科と,気管を腹肢にもつワラジムシ科,ハマワラジムシ科,ダンゴムシ科,ハマダンゴムシ科などを含む。
