Aix is an ancient city in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in southeastern France. It has a population of 127,000 (1990). It is located on a plain south of the Arc River, about 30 km north of Marseille on the Mediterranean coast. It has long been the center of Provence, and is also a medical resort with medicinal hot springs. To the north, the limestone rock mountain of Mont Sainte-Victoire stands impressively, and this scenery is well known from the paintings of the painter Cézanne, who was born in Aix and died in the town. The Cours Mirabeau, part of the remains of the old city walls, is a symbol of Aix, a wide promenade stretching 500 meters from east to west, known as a beautiful tree-lined avenue shaded by tall horse chestnut trees.
