…In this situation, the first peasant revolt in the Balkans occurred in Serbia in 1804. This First Serbian Uprising (1804-13) was led by the livestock trader Karađorđe and spread throughout Serbia. The uprising was not originally a national liberation revolt against the Ottoman Empire, but was instead a petition to the Sultan to restore the old law and order that had been destroyed by the oppression of the "Bad Turks."
