Ise school - Iseha

Japanese:
Ise school - Iseha

A school of haiku. Also known as the Ise style. According to one theory, it is a general term for the unique Ise haiku that has been around since Arakida Moritake, but generally it is a term for the Ise Shomon school centered around Iwata Ryoto and Nakagawa Otsuyu. This school advocated common conversation derived from Basho's teachings of high enlightenment and returning to the common world, and light-heartedness, and was characterized by a simple and vulgar haiku style. Although Ryoto and Otsuyu were Shomon, they were particularly influenced by Kagami Shiko. For this reason, the Ise school was similar to Shiko's Mino school, and both schools were also called Shimugi no to, meaning the schools of Shiko and Otsuyu (Bakurin). His haiku was easy to hear, and he had a great influence not only in Ise but also in the Hokuriku region, but he was looked down upon by other schools, along with the Mino school, as a rural school of Sho. Ryoto restored the Shinpukan, which had been started by Ajiro Hiroji, and became the third generation, followed by the fourth generation Soboku, the fifth generation Bairou, and the sixth generation Onko. Meanwhile, Otsuyoshi was succeeded by his son Bakuro.

The Ise school has tended to be held in low esteem because of its familiarity and vulgarity, but it is noteworthy that it influenced such leaders of the revival period as Ryukyo, Ryotai, Chora, and Ranko.
