Andokidēs - Andokidēs (English spelling)

An ancient Greek orator. Born into a famous Athenian aristocrat, he was involved in the destruction of the statue of Hermes in 415 BC and went into exile. "On the Homecoming" was the result of this incident, and after he was pardoned he left behind a speech "On Esotericism" in which he was accused of esotericism. It is said that he then went into exile again without including his argument in "On Peace with Sparta." His speeches had many rhetorical shortcomings, but because of this they were a frank expression of opinion, and they occupied an important position in the development of Greek prose.

古代ギリシアの弁論家。アテネの有名な貴族の出で、紀元前415年のヘルメス神像破壊事件にかかわり、国外に亡命した。『帰国について』はこの事件から生まれた作品で、許されたのち秘教問題で告訴された際の弁論『秘教について』を残している。その後『スパルタとの和平について』の論がいれられず再び国外に去ったといわれる。彼の弁論は修辞学的には欠点も多いが、そのためにかえって率直な意見の表明となっていて、ギリシアの散文の発達のうえで重要な位置を占めている。
