The term "additional" refers to the addition of additional laws to the Goseibai Shikimoku, also known as the "original Shikimoku," and the Kamakura Shogunate laws that came after the Shikimoku are collectively referred to as "additional laws." However, among the various collections of additional laws, some are from the Sadano, Karoku, and Kanki periods that preceded the Shikimoku, but most of them are laws regarding the rights of newly appointed land stewards after the Jokyu War, and in that respect they supplement the Shikimoku, which lacked provisions. Most additional laws are stand-alone laws, but some, such as the new system of 1261 (Kōchō 1), have more provisions than the Shikimoku, and their content is not limited to civil and criminal judicial norms, but covers a wide range of issues, including military police and various prohibitions.
