Japanese: ワタトリカイメン（英語表記）Callyspongia elegans

Phylum Porifera, Class Vulgaris Sponges, Order Monostemming Sponges, Family Rough Sponge Family. Also known as Tombinohakama. The body is 30cm high and 12cm wide, laterally depressed and cup-shaped, with a large mouth at the top. The surface of the body is rough because of a mesh of spongy fibers containing bone fragments, and the fibers gather at the nodes of the mesh to form protrusions. Only the rod-shaped bodies contain bone fragments. This species was named after the fact that it can remove cotton fluff and other debris from clothing when rubbed against it. It inhabits warm waters and attaches to shallow reefs south of central Honshu, but is often washed up on shore.

海綿動物門尋常海綿綱単骨海綿目ザラカイメン科。トンビノハカマともいう。体は高さ 30cm，幅 12cm内外の側扁したコップ状で，上端に大きな口が開く。体表面は骨片を含んだ海綿質の繊維が網目様になり，網目の節の部分に繊維が集って突起となるのでざらざらしている。骨片は小桿状体のものだけである。本種で洋服をこすると綿屑などがとれるということからその名がつけられた。暖海性で，本州中部以南の浅海岩礁に付着するが，よく海岸に打上げられている。
