Odawara Horse-drawn Railway

[Transportation development and regional transformation]
During the Edo period, Hakone was bustling with activity, centering on the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone. As a scenic spot close to Tokyo and Yokohama, Hakone began to attract many foreign visitors from the Meiji period onwards. With the development of roads, railways and other transportation networks, Hakone began to develop as an international tourist destination. In 1878, a hotel exclusively for foreigners was built in Miyanoshita, which led to the opening of a rickshaw road between Yumoto and Miyanoshita in 1887-88, and the Odawara Horse-drawn Carriage Railway between Kozu, Odawara and Yumoto. In 1900, the horse-drawn carriage railway became the Odawara Electric Railway's streetcar line. During the Taisho period, the Hakone Tozan Railway, connecting Yumoto and Gora, opened in 1919, and the development of Gora Onsen began in earnest.
