Woodblock engraver. His real name was Junzo. He was born in Tokushima Prefecture. He was a disciple of Okura Hanbei, an ukiyo-e woodblock engraver. In the Meiji era, illustrations in newspapers and magazines were woodblock reproductions of the originals, but Bonkotsu skillfully expressed the brushstrokes and textures of Western paintings with his carving knife, and with the help of Nishimura Kumakichi, a name-printer, he created magnificent reproductions. Examples of his work include the paintings of Western painters such as Fujishima Takeji in "Myojo" and the frontispiece of "Kofu," the bulletin board of the Hakuba-kai. He is also known for his engravings of Takehisa Yumeji's woodblock prints and poetry collections, and also illustrated, designed and bound books by poets and novelists such as Kinoshita Mokutaro and Natsume Soseki, and in his later years, he designed book covers for Shinchosha. Bonkotsu's woodblock technique was passed on to later creative woodblock artists by Hiratsuka Un'ichi.

木版画彫師。本名純蔵。徳島県生れ。浮世絵版画の彫師大倉半兵衛の弟子。明治時代における新聞・雑誌の挿絵は原画の複製木版画であったが，凡骨は洋画の筆触，質感を彫刀で巧妙に表現し，名摺師の西村熊吉の協力を得て，みごとな複製版画を作った。作例として《明星》所載の藤島武二ら洋画家の絵，白馬会の機関誌《光風》の口絵がある。また竹久夢二の版画・詩画集の彫版で知られるほか，木下杢太郎・夏目漱石ら詩人・小説家の本の挿絵，装画，装丁，晩年には新潮社の本の装画を手がけた。凡骨の木版技術は，平塚運一により後の創作版画家に継承された。
