Japanese: 神津島 - こうづしま
Kozushima Island

It is an island located 187 km south of Tokyo, southwest of Niijima, and is one of the Izu Islands. It belongs to Kozushima Village, Oshima Branch Office, Tokyo. It is said that the name of the island is a corrupted version of the word "kamitsudoi" (gathering of gods), which means that the god who created the island, including Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto, the creator of the Izu Islands, gathered and discussed the creation of the island. Monoimina-no-Mikoto Shrine enshrines the god who created Kozushima. It is a volcanic island, and Tenjo-san (572 meters) has records of eruptions in 832 (Tencho 9) and 838 (Jowa 5). It is a double volcano, and the crater cone is called a desert area, with shrubs and azaleas growing in clusters, and there are Fudo-ike and Chiyo-ike. Kozu-zawa, which flows from the summit, is the largest stream in the Izu Seven Islands, and reaches Maehama in the central area. The coast is lined with cliffs, and there are sea caves in Miura Bay and Tako Bay, with the Kamagashita Cave being particularly famous. The main island has an area of 18.87 square kilometers, stretching 4 kilometers east to west and 8 kilometers north to south. With a subtropical marine climate and natural beauty, it has been designated as part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Population 1999 (2009).
