Also called ureters. A pair of long tubes, about 25 cm long and 5 to 10 mm in outer diameter, that conduct urine from the kidneys to the bladder. When urine is sent to the bladder, the lumen of a certain section of the ureter passively expands with the urine flowing in from upstream, and when it expands to a certain extent, the muscles in the tube wall contract to send the urine downstream. Therefore, urine does not flow continuously, but is sent in small amounts over a few seconds to a few tens of seconds depending on the amount of urine. 輸尿管ともいう。尿を腎臓から膀胱に導く,長さ約 25cm,外径5~10mmの1対の長い管。尿を膀胱に向って送るとき,尿管のある区間の内腔が,上流から流れ込む尿で受動的に拡張し,ある程度拡張すると,管壁の筋肉が収縮して尿を下流に送り出す。したがって,尿は絶えずだらだら流れるのではなく,尿量の多寡によって数秒ないし数十秒間に少量ずつ分けて送られる。
