A device that records the magnitude of the lightning current generated by a lightning strike. Magnetic steel, the same material used to make permanent magnets, is cut into strips and wrapped in insulation to form a cylinder about 1 cm in diameter and 5 cm in length, although some are even smaller. These are installed near lightning rods or transmission towers. When a lightning current flows, the magnetic field magnetizes the magnetic steel, so the magnitude of the lightning current can be determined by measuring the residual magnetism of the magnetic steel piece later. Japan has suffered from lightning damage since the start of the electric power industry, but in 1932 magnetic steel pieces were invented in the United States, and their simplicity allowed many actual measurements of lightning current to be obtained, contributing to the advancement of lightning-resistant design for power transmission lines.
