An old town in the northern part of the Tsugaru Plain, Kitatsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. Facing the Iwaki River to the west and Lake Jusan to the northwest, it is the terminus of the Tsugaru Railway. It was once a low-lying marshland, but land improvement work has opened it up into rice paddies, and it is also a major producer of timber. In March 2005, it merged with Odomari Village in Kitatsugaru District to become a town, Nakadomari Town. Area: 151.63 km2 . Population: 11,238 (2003). 青森県北津軽郡,津軽平野北部の旧町。西は岩木川,北西は十三湖に面し,津軽鉄道の終点。低湿地帯であったが土地改良が行われて水田が開け,木材の産も多い。2005年3月北津軽郡小泊村と合併し町制,中泊町となる。151.63km2。1万1238人(2003)。
