The larvae are known to parasitize spider egg sacs and wasp nests, and among the Japanese species, Mantispa japonica and Mantispa mantis parasitize the egg sacs of the Edokomachi spider. The first instar larvae are splotchy, and from the second instar onwards they become maggot-like, with the larval stages having completely different forms depending on the instar.
