This is Natsume Soseki's first full-length novel. It was serialized in Hototogisu from January 1905 to August 1906, and published jointly by Okura Shoten and Hattori Shoten in three volumes from October 1903 to May 1904. The novel is about a cat kept in the home of junior high school teacher Chinno Kusami, who observes and records the words and actions of the high-class idlers who gather there, sharply criticizing and mocking the stupidity, ridiculousness, and ugliness of human beings. Written as a descriptive piece at the urging of Takahama Kyoshi, it was supported by readers and continued in 11 installments. Kusami is a caricature of Soseki himself, and by setting the cat's eyes as a means of seeing, he has gained the freedom to laugh at human society and himself at will. Soseki's sense of justice is fully expressed in this work, including his insults against money-driven businessmen, and he makes extensive use of techniques such as parody, caricature, and deformation. With a narrative style reminiscent of rakugo and language games from the early modern period, this work is a delightful piece of literature that will make you laugh. This is a memorable work that announced the birth of Natsume Soseki as a novelist.
