King of Denmark. Reigned 1157-82. Also known as Valdemar I. Born shortly after the murder of his father Cnut, he was raised by a powerful nobleman. In 1147 he became Duke of Slyswy, and in 1157 he defeated his rival Sweyn III, ending the civil war that had begun in 1131. Externally he actively attacked the Wends, but domestically he worked to ally with the church and expand royal power with the help of Archbishop Absalon and other powerful figures. The canonization of his father Cnut and the coronation of his son Cnut (later King VI, reigned 1182-1202) after his father helped to strengthen Valdemar's hereditary royal power.

デンマーク王。在位1157‐82年。バルデマール1世ともいう。父クヌット殺害直後に出生，有力豪族のもとで養育された。1147年スリースウィー公となり，さらに57年対立するスベン3世を破り，1131年に始まる内戦を終わらせた。対外的にはウェンド人攻撃を積極的に行う一方，国内政策では大司教アブサロンら有力者の協力を得て，教会との提携，王権の伸張に努力した。父クヌットの列聖と息子クヌット(後の6世。在位1182‐1202)の父に続く戴冠はバルデマーの世襲王権強化に役立った。
